About Pennypack Preserve

Pennypack Preserve encompasses approximately 1,600 acres of forest, wetlands, meadows, and creek corridors within Northeast Philadelphia. The Preserve protects a significant section of the Pennypack Creek watershed, providing a valuable green space home to native plants, migratory birds, and other wildlife. The geography includes gently rolling hills, riparian woodlands, vernal pools, and open fields, supporting varied ecosystems amid the urban landscape. Historically, this area contains important landmarks such as the Sandy Run Park and several historic mills dating back to colonial times, reflecting its role in early Pennsylvania industry. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 10 miles of maintained trails that wind along the creek and through diverse habitats, suitable for hiking, jogging, and wildlife viewing. Birdwatchers can observe species like wood ducks, red-tailed hawks, and great horned owls, especially in the quieter parts of the preserve. The area also serves environmental education programs and community events, fostering public awareness of local ecology and conservation. The accessibility, variety of natural features, and proximity to the city make Pennypack Preserve a highly valued urban refuge for active recreation and peaceful nature experiences. It is managed by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation department, maintaining a balance between public use and habitat preservation.
